Fellow
WebRat
Hilary Moon Murphy
has proposed a new Name-Your-Own-Dare writing challenge (for those unfamiliar
with "writing dares," it simply means that a group of writers
decide to toss down gauntlets and pledge to finish a current writing project
-- and must document the progress of said project for all fellow challengers
to see -- and to be chided, prodded, and/or cajoled into if they don't).
I have decided to join in -- because ghod only knows I need someone
to kick me in the butt when I've spent more time playing with Photoshop
and Flash than Word.

Current
Writing Dare Project:
Mind
Diver
A "time travel" romance -- estimated
length should be at least 100k words. As of the beginning this current
Dare, I have 27,848 words in the cropper.

My
Own Goals
(which I can hopefully live with):
I will strive (and I'm using that word very loosely) to produce
a total count of 1k words per week. I will post my progress,
frustrations, and giddy jubilations here, apart from my regular
journal. If I fall behind, please feel free to remind
me.

Well, the jury's still out on this entry. It's nearly 3:00 pm as I write
this entry -- I've still got a crapload of stuff to do on the portfolio
website. Unfortunately, it has to have priority over the writing stuff
-- but I'm hoping to get the thing done soon (I'll be powering through
it on Christmas for sure). I'll be glad to get that out of the way, though.
If I can just produce a measly 200 - 300 words per day on Mind Diver,
for now, that would be quite nice. I mean, it all adds up in the scheme
of things...
Melanie
has received a suggestion that the Webrats start a mailing list -- I'm
all for it! So far, Vera
thinks it's a good idea, too -- she also suggested that we have a Webrat
version of NAWticisms.
If anyone has read them on a regular basis, they'll agree that it's a
good idea as well.
Hilary
has clarified the "ground rules" of the January Dare (for the
record, Hilary, my own feathers were not ruffled -- but I can understand
if others' were. As Mel said, We're all pretty busy people. Still, Hilary
has a good idea -- and I hope that we can carry this Dare beyond January).
Welcome to
the Dare, Sam!
Saturday
12/23/00
Oh, come on -- it's freakin' Saturday. It's the one day
of the week wherein I do absolutely no work at all. 'Nuff said on that
one.
Friday
12/22/00
I was up so late (1:00 am) working on the "lobby" page of my
portfolio website that
I didn't even boot up my 'puter this evening. This afternoon, I'd had
to scurry about running Xmas errands (and I had to see Cast Away
with Tom Hanks). I know, I know and the dog ate my computer, too.
Thursday
12/21/00
Since
this is the very first day of my new dare, I'm going to cut myself some
slack -- I'll be exempt from word count today. Plus, I have the onerous
task of becoming reacquainted with Mind Diver's characters,
plot particulars and other random minutiae. You see, I haven't touched
the poor bugger since August -- just before I started my classes. Now
that the year is coming to a close, and with no completed manuscript in
hand, I've come to the realization that I've got to finish Mind Diver
by this spring. I'll try to update this log every day -- even if it's
merely a few sentences. We'll see how this endeavor works out.

A
shameless plug for an ill-fated fantasy novel which has only just visited
its last publisher and, alas, will now live its days on the Web. Please
humor us by reading the novel and leaving a caveat or kvetch in the guestbook.
It's not such a painful, terrible thing. Uh...if you'd like to display
this pathetic banner on your own Website, you can find out here.
Hey, it only takes up 18k of bandwidth...
